Bordeaux is more than wine, it is a treasure trove of classic architecture
The Place de la Bourse (the stock exchange square), making an extended curve with the lane of wharves, forms the crescent symbol of Bordeaux.
At the end of the old Regime in France Victor Louis built in Bordeaux the most beautiful theatre in Europe.
The vast Place des Quinconces has a magnificent fountain of men and horses in bronze, the fountain of the Girondins.
Bordeaux is known all over the world for its fine wines but also for its XVIIIth Century architecture which has been on the Unesco world heritage protection list since 2007. There is an exceptional crescent of wharves built in the age of enlightenment on the quais and beyond that are Roman ruins and Art Decor buildings.
Thanks to the wine trade, Bordeaux has been wealthy since Roman Times. The Galian Palace (Ist to IIIrd century) is an amphitheatre of 22,000 seats and the last remaining monument of Burdigala.
It was only in 1822 that the first bridge over the Garonne river was built. This Stone Bridge, the most impressive of its epoch, was declared by its contemporaries to be the monument of the age.
